Bulawayo City Council has dismissed allegations that its water has been contaminated by the dangerous chemical, cyanide.

In a statement, Town Clerk Christopher Dube, said there is no evidence to support such claims.

Laboratory tests conducted on the City’s water samples from the local dams have cleared the fear.

They confirmed the absence of detectable levels of cyanide or any other harmful contaminants.

“The safety and quality of Bulawayo’s water is of the utmost priority for the Municipality.

“We maintain rigorous water testing and monitoring protocols to ensure the water meets all regulatory standards for potability and safety.

“Laboratory tests conducted on water samples from the City’s dams have confirmed that there are no detectable levels of cyanide or any other harmful contaminants.

“The water continues to be safe for all domestic, agricultural, and industrial uses.

Dube said the messages circulating on social media are misinformation.

Social media was alive with the frightening allegations following concerns raised by Councillors and members of the Future Water Supplies and Water Action Committee.

In a bid to allay the fears Council officials this week visited the proposed Heap Leach Pad in UMzingwane District.

They checked on the potential environmental impact of the site which is near Upper Ncema dam.

“The City is closely monitoring the situation and will take all necessary actions to safeguard the water supply.

We ask that the public remain vigilant but avoid falling prey to misinformation,” added Dube.

Early this year Guruve residents raised health fears following the cyanide contamination of their major water source, Dande River.

This was a result of an accidental cyanide spillage at Eureka Gold Mine in Guruve Mashonaland Central province.
