Harare Council is launching another operation, described as “massive”, against public transporters in a bid to curb congestion.
In a statement Acting Town Clerk Phakamile Mabhena said congestion is partly a result of the use of illegal pick-up points.
Thus the authorities will seek to deal will all who abuse the law in that regard.
“There has been an increase in congestion levels on the streets of Harare especially during the morning and evening peak periods.
“Our observations have been that this is exacerbated by buses and commuter omnibuses that are picking and dropping passengers at undesignated points.
“Some park on the streets and block lanes resulting in heavy congestion.
To deal with this, Mabhena said they will be launching a massive operation.
“Given the above, the City of Harare wishes to inform residents, public transport operators and stakeholders that we have launched a massive enforcement operation to rid the city of congestion.
Meanwhile, to reduce congestion, Harare has unveiled new arrangements for public transport operators.
“Operators along Sam Nujoma (Second Street), with immediate effect, must use Coventry Road Rank and Mbare Musika.
“All buses destined for Bulawayo that are illegally picking passengers from Showgrounds or along Samora Machel Avenue must use Mbare Musika and Coventry Road Bus Rank.
Harare has 5 major commuter omnibus termini.
These are Market Square, Charge Office, Copacabana, S. Muzenda (4th Street) and Rezende North.
All the picking up and dropping points established by ZUPCO during COVID era are no longer operational.
