The resolution passed at the just-ended ZANU PF People’s Conference to remove Presidential term limits goes against wishes of 79% of the country.

The findings are contained in an Afrobarometer survey whose results came out in October.

According to the research “about eight in 10 Zimbabweans (79%) support the present constitutional arrangement that limits the president to serving two terms in office.

“Men are more likely than women to support presidential term limits (81% vs. 76%).

“As are urban residents compared to their rural counterparts (85% vs. 74%),” it said.

Support for term limits increases with respondents’ level of education.

It rises from 69% among those with primary schooling or less to 87% among those with tertiary education.

Calls for President Mnangagwa to extend his term beyond 2028 have divided the country and even the ruling party.

The likes of Youth Minister Tino Machakaire, John Paradza, State Minister Owen Ncube have been leading the calls for the extension.

However, Mnangagwa himself has constantly denied having ambitions to go beyond his term.

Still, critics have argued that the former State Security Minister is the one orchestrating the plan behind the scenes.

Mnangagwa initially won electoral power on 2018 before winning again in 2023.

His deputy, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is heavily tipped to succeed him.

Zimbabwe has never had a peaceful succession with the previous President Robert Mugabe remove through a coup on 2017.
