Marondera Rural District Council is set to be awarded town board status according to the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe.
Garwe was speaking at the commissioning of the newly refurbished Council offices and motorcycles for councillors.
“Marondera RDC has four universities, and with this we encourage the council to apply for town board status and we are going to support them,” he said.
According to Urban Councils Act Chapter 29:15, the status of an urban council is determined by number of factors.
These include population size, infrastructure, services offered and social development.
Speaking at the same occasion Council Chairperson Cllr Jeremiah Gwanzura said the new status status will accelerate development and improved service delivery.
“Growth and expansion will promote the local construction industry and creation of jobs as well as unlock land for development of houses.
“An administrative structure with mandate to collect its own revenue and expand it locally, will be noticed,” he added.
This will leave Mashonaland East with four urban councils namely Chikomba, Mutoko, Murehwa and Marondera RDC.
