Harare’s water modernisation programme has reached 84 percent of its annual target, with 83,650 smart prepaid water meters now installed.

Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Charles Tawengwa, revealed the figures while presenting progress on water and sanitation interventions in the province.

The target for the year is 100,000 meters, with current installations representing approximately 84 percent achievement.

In addition, 82 kilometres of ageing water pipelines have been replaced against an annual target of 106 kilometres.

This represents a 77 percent achievement.

Five new pumps have also been commissioned at Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant to strengthen raw-water supply to the city.

“This is encouraging progress in modernising our water distribution system, reducing losses, and improving accountability,” Senator Tawengwa said.

He, however, challenged responsible authorities to ensure that the technical progress translates into improved service delivery.

“As these interventions advance, residents must experience improvements in water availability, quality, and service reliability.

“Concerns regarding meter accuracy, billing, and interrupted supply must receive prompt attention from the responsible authorities and implementing partners,” he said.

“The remaining works must be pursued with urgency so that we achieve the targets set for the year.”

Senator Tawengwa was speaking during the Second Provincial Development Committee and the ruling party’s Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting held in Harare on Tuesday.
