Murewa Rural District Council has launched a debt recovery campaign offering ratepayers substantial discounts on outstanding bills in a bid to improve revenue collection and strengthen service delivery.

The initiative, running under the slogan “Pay Today. Save Today. Build Murewa,” targets commercial farmers, A2 farmers, businesses and ordinary residents.

Under the first phase, which runs from October 13 to 17, debtors who pay 50 percent of their outstanding balances will have the remaining 50 percent waived.

75 percent under second phase

The second phase, scheduled for October 20 to 23, requires ratepayers to settle 75 percent of their outstanding debts to qualify for a 25 percent waiver.

The council has indicated that the discounts will only apply to payments made within the stipulated promotional periods.

It means debtors must meet the relevant payment requirements before the respective deadlines.

The campaign is expected to encourage ratepayers to settle their arrears while helping the local authority mobilise resources for its operations and development programmes.

Revenue collected by rural district councils is critical for financing essential services and infrastructure development, including road maintenance, waste management and other community projects.

The initiative also provides an opportunity for residents, farmers and businesses to reduce their financial obligations to the council while contributing towards the development of Murewa District.

The council is yet to disclose the total amount owed by ratepayers, its revenue recovery target and the specific development projects expected to benefit from the exercise.
