Marondera East has built its first Advanced Level classroom block at St Ludger Secondary School using Constituency Development Fund (CDF), ending over three decades without such in the area.
The block was constructed under Marondera East legislator Vimbayi Mutokonyi.
Established in 1991, St Ludger has forced learners to seek A-Level places at distant schools.
For many poor families, the costs of transport, accommodation and higher fees meant dropping out after Ordinary Level.
The new block will serve St Ludger and three surrounding secondary schools as feeder schools, cutting travel distances and improving retention.
However, the school cannot yet enrol A-Level learners.
Mashonaland East Provincial Education Director Anatoria Ncube said the school still requires a science laboratory to be fully registered as a high school.
“St Ludger needs to construct a science laboratory for it to be fully recognised as a high school and to support the effective teaching of science subjects at Advanced Level,” Ncube said.
Qualified teachers, learning materials and formal approval from education authorities are also still required before classes can begin.
The project marks a major step in using CDF to address rural education gaps, but laboratory and staffing gaps must be closed before learners can benefit.
