Marondera Municipality has stepped up its bid for city status by courting private investors for infrastructure, tourism and business expansion.
The municipality recently hosted an investment meeting at its chambers with representatives from companies including KFC, Mukhakuri Resorts, ZIMPOST and AK Roofing to discuss partnerships and potential projects.
Council said the engagement was meant to position Marondera as an attractive investment destination and to understand investor interests and challenges.
“By engaging directly with potential investors, Council aims to understand their interests, address any challenges they may face, and identify practical ways to facilitate investment within the Municipality,” council said in a notice.
Marondera has formally submitted its application for city status to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
Council says city status would raise the town’s economic profile and help attract new investment.
Key areas targeted for investment include business expansion, infrastructure development and tourism.
Council says these could stimulate economic activity and grow its gross domestic product.
It also said it is committed to modernising infrastructure, improving service delivery and promoting sustainable urban development.
“Council is on a transformative journey to modernize infrastructure, enhance service delivery, and establish a vibrant smart city of service excellence, in line with the Council’s vision,” the notice reads.
The local authority said the drive aligns with public-private partnerships and the national Vision 2030 agenda.
The push comes as Marondera seeks to expand its economic base, create jobs and improve infrastructure.
Council has not yet disclosed the value of any proposed investments or timelines for specific projects arising from the meeting.
The success of the drive will depend on whether the engagements translate into concrete projects that deliver tangible benefits to residents.
