Bikita Ward 24 has come under severe water challenges as its infrastructure is now both inadequate and rundown.
The situation has been worsened by the current drought and an increasing population.
The Councillor for the Ward, Stephen Chakamba, says many boreholes have broken down while the population has increased.
“Drinking water is big problem for this ward.
“We have boreholes but they are not enough.
“We have 14 villages and each village has a single borehole.
Chakamba said most of the boreholes were drilled in early 2000.
“Most are now developing faults others are close to getting dry due to the El Nino induced drought.
“People are now fetching water from rivers sharing the commodity with domestic animals,” he said.
Chakamba said the rise in the population has also seen the precious liquid being a scarce commodity.
According to the Councillor the population is over 5000.
He added that some villagers are already relying on water from three rivers Mushuma, Devure and Mutsingidzi.
However, the Clr, who is in his first term, said council plans on acquiring a drilling rig.
It will see more boreholes being drilled in the district.
“The problem is not peculiar to my ward alone but is affecting all the 32 wards in the district.
“As council we passed a resolution that we need to purchase a drilling rig so that we can drill more boreholes,” he said.
