Chegutu is struggling to deal with a monthly output of 180 tonnes of solid waste in the absence of a viable recycling program.

The absence of big corporates investing in the recycling technology has resulted in Chegutu engaging small players.

However, Water, Safety and Health (WASH) Engineer Ralph Kunda said the initiative is working.

“A project is ongoing at our main site where we have groups, with us as partners.

“(They) are engaged in recycling the waste for beneficial use.

“As a town, we have a program to effectively and efficiently manage that waste so it becomes useful to us as council and all other stakeholders.

Kunda said all the collected waste is dumped at its main site.

“We collect at least 180 tonnes of solid waste each month which we haul to our main dump site.

“At the mega collection zone, we have improved our management system of late.

He said Council collects waste that is dumped at both designated and undesignated sites around town.

Recently Chegutu was named along with Karoi and Chinhoyi as among urban authorities still employing use of the old dump system.

Many Local Authorities are struggling to deal with waste as cities and towns grow.

City of Harare has since entered into a Waste-To-Energy agreement with Geogenix BV.

The project, if successful, is expected to provide a model for how Local Authorities can deal with waste going forward.
