Chitungwiza Council has resolved to go door to door in the collection of rates to shore up its revenue.
In a statement on Thursday Acting Town Clerk Japson Nemuseso said the initiative will begin from October 17.
He said the program will enhance convenience for residents and other stake-holders.
“Our teams will be moving around residential areas and business centres with point-of-sale (POS) machines, allowing you to pay bills from the comfort of your homes, offices, or businesses.
“The teams comprise uniformed municipal police officers and cashiers.
“Cash payments are accepted. In tandem with this the Council officials will also be collecting vital statistics at each household or premise to update the council’s database.
“The officials will request mobile numbers to enable the council to send bills electronically via text messages or emails.
“We encourage all stakeholders to take advantage of this exercise to clear their outstanding bills,” he said.
Chitungwiza’s average revenue collection rate stood has hovered between 60 and 70% over the past year.
In May 2023 Chitungwiza Council also announced that it would begin billing rates in USD.
However, there hasn’t much change to the revenue collection as residents have struggled to pay.
