Marondera residents were left in shock after a council employee turned functional public toilets into a storage room for vendors.

The council official, only named as Mr Luis, would charge US$0.50 to store various vegetable perishables for the vendors.

The council-owned toilet is functional and is used by people during the day.

However, in the evenings the official would then use the toilet as a storage room for fruits and other edible vegetables.

Marondera Municipality Mayor Councilor Abel Nyakarombo confirmed the incident.

“We are seized with matter.

“Council Health Department and Zimbabwe Republic Police attended the scene.

“Our employee who was responsible for keeping toilets clean was arrested immediately,” said Mayor Nyakarombo.

Residents expressed shock stating that the situation exposed them to cholera.

“We have a cholera outbreak so surely storing perishables in a toilet is an easy way of spreading the disease,” said a resident who preferred anonymity.

Unconfirmed reports state that Council has also fired him.
