Harare City Council has set-up a new Sports and Arts Committee which will focus on developing and supporting the two sectors.
Cllr Stanely Manyenga was elected Chairperson and said the committee will focus on structures of sport and a strategy for sports funding.
Manyenga said funding is the hindering factor for sporting activities in the City.
Councils establish committees, each with a specific area of responsibility, such as finance, sports and health.
The political parties involved then appoint elected members to those committees.
However, Harare Council has previously come under fire for its sporting activities.
It has been bankrolling various soccer, athletics and netball teams.
At a time when it is struggling with service delivery residents allege such initiatives are a sign of poor priorities.
The Local Authority however contends that sports have a central rope to play.
