Harare City Council is owed over ZiG 8 billion, with residents owing a staggering ZiG 5 billion from that total.
This was revealed in the latest Debtor’s Age Analysis Report, which was presented by Acting Head for Revenue, Alfred Guni.
Guni, who was updating officials on the current Operation Restore Order, said the deficit had made operations dysfunctional.
In a statement Council has since called for all individuals with arrears to clear them.
The authority has promised to undertake measures to recoup the money.
“The City is urging its stakeholders to urgently clear their debts, warning that continued non-payment threatens service delivery and the city’s operational efficiency.
“The City is taking stern measures to recover the debt and urges ratepayers to settle as soon as possible.
“(This will) avoid inconveniences of business closures and residents losing their properties through court orders.
Besides residents owing the City ZiG5 billion, the commercial sector owes ZiG1,09 billion, and industry owes ZiG1.05 billion.
Other significant arrears and debts include the Government owing ZiG167 million and ZESA ZiG455 million.
Dormitory towns owe ZiG345 million for various services such as water.
Meanwhile, parastatals owe Harare ZiG64 million and sundry with ZiG31 million.
