Harare City Council is set to install vehicle tracking system on its fleet in order to curb abuse and losses.
Revelations of this new development are contained in the latest minutes of Harare’s Full Council meeting.
“The Committee noted with concern, that a tender on installation of a tracking system on all Council vehicles had not yet been concluded.
During further discussions, the Committee agreed that all Council vehicles be on tracker and enquired on update on this matter.
“The Transport Manager reported that the City had gone to tender.
The tender was awarded to Tel Track which is a Tel One entity.
However, Council’s Supply Chain Manager advised that they are still in negotiations with the supplier.
Tel One launched Tel Track in September 2020 and government was among its first customers.
The vehicle tracking and fleet management system ensures that organisations keep track of their vehicles and improves efficiencies in fleet management.
The system was launched by Information Communication Minister Jenfan Muswere.
Government has since installed over 400 vehicles with tracking systems under a $53 million facility.
At that time estimates put Government’s losses at several millions of dollars annually in servicing and fuel costs for its vehicle fleet.
The tracking system monitors fuel consumption and the vehicle’s engine.
This is meant to stop theft of fuel and diversion of cars to unsanctioned routes.
In 2015 Bulawayo City Council also acquired a vehicle tracking system to curb misuse of its vehicles.
