In a bid to curb the illegal selling of land by village heads, Marondera Rural District Council is set to issue household permits.

The move follows rampant parceling out of state land by Village Heads in rural and peri-urban areas.

Recently, 4 village heads from Dema were convicted for selling stands in undesignated places.

To curb the menace, the Council is set to issue household permits.

“Village heads are at the center of parceling communal land illegally.

“Council`s strategy to address this issue is to work with Traditional Chiefs and bring all culprits to book.

“Council will also move at speed to issue out household permits in terms of the Traditional Leaders and Communal Lands Act,” reads part of the statement.

Section 47 of the Land Acquisition Act Chapter 20:10 of 1992 prohibits the sale or disposal of rural land.

Meanwhile, the duties of village-heads are clearly spell out Section 12 of Traditional Leaders Act 29:17.

They do not include allocation of land.

However, that has not stopped the rampant practice as housing pressure has grown lately.
