Residents of Ward 5 in Marondera Central have taken a bold stand against crime and drug abuse, raiding and evicting a group of drug users who had been terrorizing the community.

The group, reportedly more than 30 people strong, had occupied a house on Gora Street.

The house had since been turned into a hub for drugs, prostitution, and theft.

Ward 5 Councilor Hilton Chipashu confirmed the community-led action.

Chipashu said residents had endured months of harassment and crime.

“We managed to team up and raid the house after several complaints from residents.

“The drug users were stealing from the community and even robbing children sent to buy bread,” he said.

Cllr Chipashu added that the gang included sex workers, with some clients also reporting being robbed during or after encounters.

Narrated Ordeals

Local residents described the ordeal as traumatic.

Gogo Murima, who lives a few houses away, said the gang would steal anything to fund their drug habits.

“We barely slept because of the noise at night.

“They even stole wet clothes from the washing line.

“So we had to take turns watching our laundry until it dried,” she recounted.

Another neighbor, Mrs. Mhuru, echoed the frustration, saying the group constantly made noise and stole belongings.

“Life was unbearable.

“We couldn’t live in peace,” she said.

Ongoing Concerns

The eviction has brought relief to the community, but residents remain concerned about the broader issue of drug abuse and crime in the area.

Many believe stronger collaboration between authorities and communities is needed.

This they say will ensure lasting safety and address root causes fueling the drug crisis.

Drug Problems in Zimbabwe

Drug abuse is a problem in many countries; globally, the number of illicit drug users was estimated at 296 million in 2021.

According to Civil Liberties and Drug Network drug abuse accounts for 60% of psychiatric admissions in Zimbabwe.

Of the total cases 80% involve young people aged 16-25.

In 2024, President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched a Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan (2024-2030).

It aims to strengthen enforcement of anti-drug laws and disrupt drug supply chains.

The law also provides for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services.

Cabinet has also approved the principles of a Drug and Substance Agency Bill.

It will establish a specialised anti-drug agency.
