Councillors have called for speedy rehabilitation of Glensomas cemetery as the old Paradise Park, is set to be decommissioned.

According to Full Council minutes council will soon run out of burial space at Paradise Park necessitating need for Glensomas Cemetery.

“Burial space at Paradise Park is fast filling up.

“This calls for accelerated progress at Glensomas Cemetery as the city may soon face burial space challenges.”

However, some are of the opinion that priority should be given to the Town Clerk’s accomodation.

Ward 4 Cllr Charles Ngwena said instead of erecting a precast wall at Glensomas they must prioritise the Town Clerk’s house.

“With the status of Town Clerk, he should get proper accommodation.

“We must prioritise him before Glensomas as we cannot prioritise those who are dead,” he said.

However, the Acting Chamber Secretary Thomas Ndoro said the cemetery has to come first.

“We have to service Glensomas Cemetery first.

“At the same time considering Town Clerk’s accommodation,” he said.

Glensomas, located in Hunyani, was established as space was running out at Paradise Park.

The shortage of burial space has lately resulted in council selling graves on wetlands and on roadsides.
