Marondera residents are struggling with a severe water shortage which has forced some to resort to unsafe water sources.

The town has gone for a week without running water and residents are living in fear of waterborne diseases.

In a statement Marondera Municipality said the crisis is a result of power supply outages.

“The municipality would like to inform residents and stakeholders that council has been experience significant and prolonged power supply outages at its water supply station since 19 August 2024 to date.

“As a result the water supply for entire Marondera has been affected.

“Consequently, our normal water supply schedule has been disrupted,” read part of the statement.

Marondera Residents Open Forum director Tapiwa Chengeta said council should prioritize the provision of water.

“As residents we are unhappy with how our local authority handles issue of service delivery especially of water.

“Water is life and it’s troublesome for us as residents of Marondera as we spend the whole week without water.

“Although we appreciate the electricity challenges, we have advocated for better and green methods like solar for such critical services.

Chengeta said the town cannot function without water because this will lead to a sudden rise in disease outbreaks.

He has since called council to expeditiously deal with the crisis.
