Norton MP Richard Tsvangirai has found himself in a tussle with Ward 7 Councillor Tinashe Machemedze as they both claim credit for an Emergency Road Rehabilitation Program in the town.
Government recently announced that Instant Tar is taking up the rehabilitation of Shonhiwa and Koshen Drives under ERRP.
This resulted in both Tsvangirai and Machemedze coming out to claim credit for the project.
In a social media post Tsvangirai claimed credit alleging that he has pushed the issue in Parliament.
“I visited Shonhiwa Drive, which is under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development.
“I promised the people of Norton that if elected, I’m going to push for the completion of Shonhiwa Drive.
“And that’s what I have been doing.
“I have been vocal about this road in the House of Assembly, and it is great that we’re starting to witness progress.
“If everything goes well, the contractor is supposed to complete the aforementioned road by the end of July 2024.
However, the sentiments didn’t go well with Councillor Machemedze.
The Cllr accused Tsvangirai of grabbing unmerited credit.
Instead he said he was the one who wrote to the Ministry of Transport about the project.
“How one suddenly emerges from the bush to claim credit for a process whose genesis he has no idea about is astonishing.
Machemedze posted a letter showing how he had written to Government about the issue.
The tiff is only the latest in a long running drama in which the two have sparred.
After his election win Tsvangirai has found himself a figure of ridicule after appearing to side with the infamous Sengezo Tshabangu.
Meanwhile, the ERRP is a government program launched in 2019.
Lately it has faced financial challenges resulting in abandoned roads across the country.
