Zimbabwean politician Mara Makunura, elected Mayor for Rushmoor Borough in May, has become the first female black African to hold the position.

Previously Makunura served as Deputy Mayor for the UK town.

She follows in the footsteps of another Zimbabwean politician in the UK.

In May 2022 Tafadzwa Chikoto was elected Mayor for Corby Town Council, in North Northamptonshire.

He made history again becoming the first ever black mayor.

Cllr Chikoto, known to many as Taffy, had served as Deputy Mayor the previous year.

It was another historic feat as he was the first ever black Deputy Mayor.

In 2020 another Zimbabwean-born politician, Adam Jogee was elected Mayor of Haringey, a borough in North London, UK.

Jogee is of Zimbabwean and Jamaican descent.

Meanwhile, Makunura initially relocated to the UK in 1997.

She currently represents Knellwood Ward in Farnborough as Councillor.

The Mayor is supported in her role by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Calum Stewart.
