19 Budiriro 5B families staying in a flash flood prone area are still refusing to be relocated to the new Dzivaresekwa Flats.
While 29 families have agreed to move the other 19 are insisting on remaining in the area.
This was revealed by Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume during the the 1928th Full Council meeting.
“Some of the families in Budiriro are going to be taken there.
“Some of them refused, they still want to be in Budiriro where it is prone to floods,” he said.
Mafume said there is need for a solution to avert future flooding in the area.
“I don’t know what we are going to do.
“The last time I was the only one, together with the Director of Civil Protection, who responded to their call for assistance.
“My observation is that that bridge is one of the biggest problems because it is acting as a dam.
“It creates a dam wall and the water creates a flood plain where the houses are.
“I’m not an engineer but a deepening of the stream itself can help.
“The bridge is the problem we need to deal with that,” he said.
Government recently completed 6 flats which were commissioned by President Mnangagwa.
The Budiriro 5B Extension families, affected by flash floods in 2021, were cited as first beneficiaries.
Civil Protection Unit had evacuated some of these families to the Budiriro Vocational Training Centre, with some having their homes completely swept away.
