Marondera councillors have ordered council management to repair traffic control lights near Chicken Inn, along Harare-Mutare highway, in a bid to avert constant accidents and traffic jams.
The robots stopped functioning after they were hit and destroyed by a truck which veered off the road and ploughed into the traffic lights.
Since then, traffic movement has been slowed while a number of people crossing into the CBD lost their lives after being hit by motorists.
Speaking during council’s full council meeting, acting Town Clerk Rinashe Nyamuzihwa said they were waiting for the truck driver’s company to repair the traffic lights.
This did not go well with the councillors who ordered council management to move in quickly and repair the robots.
Nyamuzihwa said they need at least ZWL3 million to repair the lights.
Ward 10 councillor Jimmy Jalifi said council should use proceeds from the clamping department to fix the robots.
“Let council use money realised from clamping to fix the traffic control lights.
“It is a mess at the moment, we need to move fast and solve this,” he said.
