Some Masvingo City councillors are still clueless on their mandate as Audit Committee members and have been advised to go for a training exercise.
The move follows confusion during a recent Full Council meeting.
“The Town Clerk be instructed to organize training for Audit Committee members.
They will be “educated on the mandate of Audit as well as the duties and responsibilities,” reads Council minutes.
The role of the audit committee is normally to seek assurance that the council’s financial reporting, internal controls, governance, and risk management are effective and can be relied upon by councillors and citizens.
However, the members of the Audit Committee displayed lack of capacity when they asked the Town Clerk to present reports on procurement.
This followed illegal actions by the Procurement Department in the acquisition of some air conditioners.
However, the Town Clerk queried the instruction to submit a progress report.
Instead, he said that duty lay with the Head of Procurenent who should have done so.
Council has since set in motion investigations over the procurement of the air conditioners.
It alleges misrepresentation by some Council officials leading to fraud.
The Audit Committee is seeking that appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against the said members.
