Masvingo City Council is battling huge losses of treated water with the bill standing at a staggering US$384 135 for May alone.
In its latest monthly report the Engineering Department says the major cause is metering inaccuracies.
This is because of residents who purchase water meters which are not compatible with the local authority’s reading system.
It has since advised Council to retain ownership of water meters to avoid usage of wrong ones.
Currently, residents can privately acquire meters on their own which has led to the use of incompatible meters.
“A proposal was made for Council to retain ownership of water meters to enable control of the meters.
“(This will) therefore ensure faster replacement in the event of malfunctioning,” reads the report.
In February Council lost 45.7% of its treated water in February with a value of US$432 714.
Meanwhile residents are still lamenting over poor water supplies.
The city is supposed to supply 30 million litres of water a day.
However, most residents are only receiving the precious liquid at least three hours a day.
The Acting Director of Engineering Services reported that water supply was being affected by power outages.
Efforts to engage and find common ground with ZESA over the issue are still underway.
