Mutare Council has promised to ring-fence revenue from parking charges for use in rehabilitating roads.
In a Press statement, Acting Town Clerk Blessing Chafesuka acknowledged concerns by motorists over the funds.
“Please note that all parking fees are ring-fenced and are channelled towards the repair of our roads, which are currently in poor state.
”In a bid to increase the revenue base Mutare has also begun making new parking markings.
“We have begun marking these areas and we will continue to mark more areas for improved enforcement.
“We have also noted that these parking areas have been misused by illegal taxi operators and unauthorised vendors selling their wares from parked vehicles.
”Parking companies, in conjunction with Councils, have been accused of abusing funds from parking.
Both Harare’s City Parking and Bulawayo’s TTI have had to defend themselves from such accusations.
Currently City Parking is the subject of interrogation under the Harare Commission of Inquiry proceedings.
Meanwhile, TTI has also faced pressure to have its contract cancelled for abusing parking funds.
Many residents allege that proceeds from parking have failed to be deployed efficiently.
