Council has promised to demolish illegal settlements which have sprouted near Highglen on a piece of land meant for a multidisciplinary stadium.
Councillor Stanley Manyenga, who chairs the Sports and Arts Committee, said the project is earmarked to begin next year.
“We had a tour of Budiriro and Highglen where stadiums are going to be built.
“There are illegal settlements dotted around the area.
“However, Council is going to see to it that the place is safeguarded for the purposes of building the stadium,” he said.
Another stadium for multi-sports is set to be built in Budiriro.
Preparations are already underway for a facility that will cover basketball, tennis, netball and a football pitch.
Land Baron Challenge
Council has been struggling to retain vast tracts of land as illegal settlers are rapidly taking over.
Recent demolition exercises to retake land have been cited as gross and inhumane.
However, authorities have reiterated that over 5000 illegal houses will be demolished.
Council Director of Planning Samuel Nyabeze said they won’t allow lawlessness to take over the capital city.
“A settlement has to be planned with all amenities in place before people start building.
“You cannot build a house without council-approved plans; you cannot build where there are no sewer and water facilities.
Nyabeze urged residents to check with Council before buying land.
“Even when building a structure, every stage should have council approvals,” he said.
