Residents and motorists in Marondera have threatened officials with a demonstration as they accuse council’s clamping officials of being extortionists.
The Municipality of Marondera recently terminated the contract of the private clamping company but kept the same employees.
Motorists have accused the parking officials of lacking communication skills as well as bad misconduct.
“The harassment we are getting from the clamping team is too much.
“Let’s us embark on a car demo, we park anywhere in town as say ‘clamp us all’, as part of the protest,” read one of the messages doing rounds on social media.
Marondera Residents Open Forum (MAROF) director Tapiwa Chengeta said council needs to address the issue.
“As residents, we continue to be disturbed by the continued bad conduct of clamping officials in Marondera.
“We once engaged our lawyers and took the issue to court over the way the company contracted to maintain parking was doing it’s work especially in clamping.
The move resulted in Council cancelling the contract with the private company.
“Long before we celebrated we saw the same clamping team now under the council still doing the same system.
“Our expectation would have been a more sincere approach especially with council in charge. The continued clamping of vehicles is disturbing the flow of traffic and business in the town.
“What has become more painful is the way in which the council team is doing it’s work.
“They allow other vehicles to freely load while they clamp any other vehicle that would not have paid them some pocket money.
“This extortionist approach should stop forthwith,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Marondera Mayor Simbarashe Nyahuye were fruitless.
