A Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councilor is offering internship programs for youths in a bid to fight drug abuse.
The youths are being deployed to clompanies operating in his ward.
Clr Daniel Mberikunashe, who is the Masvingo Deputy Mayor, says he is trying to keep the youths occupied.
“My ward has a number of light industries operating here.
“I entered into a partnership with most of the companies.
“We agreed that youths, who have nothing to do should simply approach these companies for internship programs.”
“(These will be) in various disciplines and are readily available for them,” he said.
Mberikunashe said for some programs no qualifications will be required.
One simply need to be a local resident.
Under the program the youths will be trained in carpentry, motor mechanics and welding.
Already a number of youths in the ward are participating in this project.
Though appreciating the initiative, local residents have called for Council to do more.
Drug abuse has become a pandemic in the country.
