Marondera municipality has engaged debt collectors as it goes after over ZWL$3 billion owed by ratepayers.

The council is owed money by residents, the business community and other ratepayers.

Council Public Relations Officer Mr Kudakwashe Tapfumaneyi said they have a variety of measures to recoup the money.

“Council is owed about ZWL$ 3billion by residents, corporates and rate-payers.

“In a bid to recover what is owed to us, we have since instituted a raft of measures.

“We hope (they) will boost our efforts to have all debts settled.

Tapfumaneyi said debt collectors have been issuing overdue reminders to debtors.

“On another note, council enforces the closure of operations for some business entities that will be in arrears.

“In instances whereby debtors do not respond to the mentioned measures, we will seek legal recourse,” he said.

Meanwhile, the council itself owes ZWL$630 million to its creditors.

These include National Social Security Authority (NSSA), Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and many others.
