Ward 13 villagers in Chiredzi are in dire need of US$150k for the completion of Masukwe Clinic to avoid 30km journeys to the nearest health facility.
Clinic Chairperson John Maphimile said the project has stalled due to lack of funding.
“Construction started in 2019 but has seen progress come to a halt of late due to lack of funding.
“We’re now stuck as we heavily rely on funds from Campfire and Gonarezhou Conservation Trust (GCT).
Maphimile said villagers have been helping with menial labour, security and materials which they can afford.
“We also got assistance from Thabani Moyo, a safari operator who came in handy with a solar powered borehole.
When completed the facility will serve at least 15 surrounding villages.
Major structures awaiting attention include an incinerator, a block of two nurses’ residence, a guardroom and the perimeter wall.
“When complete, people will be relieved from enduring long distances of at least 30 km to the nearest Pahlela Clinic.
“In worst cases, referrals are made to Chikombedzi District and Chiredzi General Hospitals, in that order.
People in the area mainly succumb to malaria and wildlife attacks as it is deep in Southeast Lowveld.
Masukwe Clinic is in Ward 13 within the jurisdiction of Chief Gezani who presides over 4 Headmen and 92 Village Heads.
