One Child Missing As Budiriro Is Hit By Flooding

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported a suspected fatality after the flooding of 15 houses in Budiriro this week.

The authorities said the 6-year old minor is missing while it managed to evacuate the rest of residents.

“The ZRP reports a sad incident where nearly 15 houses were submerged in water in Budiriro 4 Paddock area, Harare.

“Several people were marooned and rescued by ZRP Sub-Aqua Unit while a six-year-old minor is missing after heavy rains,” it said.

The flooding follows a heavy pounding which hit Harare and surrounding areas on Thursday and Friday.

“The ZRP Sub-Aqua Unit has also rescued 19 families in Kuwadzana Extension where some houses had been submerged in water,” said police.

Both the Budiriro and Kuwadzana Extension areas are perennially victims of floods almost every season.

In 2022 nearly 60 people from 43 families in Budiriro B were evacuated after another episode of flooding.

They were evacuated to Budiriro 2 Vocational Community Training centre while others preferred to remain with their families.

The Department of Civil Protection has deemed the area unsafe for people but residents have remained there for years.

Government says it is pushing for the commissioning of a flat complex in Dzivarasekwa Extension for permanent resettlement of the households in Budiriro B.
