Space barons are allegedly getting over US$120 000 from illegal operations at the Glen View complex.
Denford Ngadziore, Council Chairperson for the Small and Medium Enterprises Committee revealed this.
In a statement the Councilor said they are moving to stop the illegal practice.
“It has come to our attention that there are space barons who are illegally collecting US$50 per trader at the complex.
“The complex has over 2400 traders.
“Space barons intend to illegally collect over US$120 000 a month.
“Council is in the process of engaging the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) so that relevant action is taken against these criminals.
Ngadziore added that his Committee is making efforts to make sure that all traders are protected from these space barons.
Council has been struggling to assert control for it’s various markets in the capital.
Mupedzanhamo, in Mbare, was closed last year after Zanu PF and CCC youths engaged in political battles for control of vending bays.
The area had become a political battleground with party officials demanding money for vendors to conduct their business.
Harare Mayor Ian Makone has since promised to deal with the issue.
His predecessor, Jacob Mafume, failed to bring sanity despite promising to return Mupedzanhamo to its former self.
